David Blanke - South Texas Distance
Swimmer
Each of the past five summers, I have completed
one or more "marathon swims" (depending on your definition
of that term).
Last year, I swam the 21.8 mile English Channel
(11:32), placed fifth in the 28.5 mile Manhattan Island Marathon
Swim (8:06:44), and also placed fifth in the annual 24 mile Tampa
Bay Marathon Swim (11:51). In 2000, I placed seventh in the Manhattan
Island Marathon Swim (8:30). In 1999, I placed fifth in the Manhattan
Island Marathon Swim (7:10:55). The prior year, 1998, I placed fourteenth
in the 12.5 mile Swim Around Key West (4:40:57). In 1997, I swam
the Auau Channel (approximately 10 miles) between the Hawaiian Islands,
Lanai and Maui (3:58). This summer (2002), I plan to make a double-crossing
of the Strait of Gibraltar (a total of 20-22 miles) in late May
and compete in the USS 25K National Championships in Newport Beach,
California on July 8.
