The Joy of Swimming — July 2002

PURSUIT OF PLEASURE (those with kinesthetic sensations enjoyed in participation)

— "I view the water as sensual when I swim…it feels good…and I like to swim fast with fins…I like to have a tan… also, so I don't want to have a heart attack" (Kirk Tuck; male; had heart attack within two weeks of conversation, but is recovering nicely, in the water!)

— "My love of swimming is kinda like worship in a way. I used to go to church a lot, but I really don't want to do that as much any more… The pool is kind of like a church, and I go to church every day… I guess I wanted to worship my own body, for once." (female)

— "I swim because I used to feel really fat…I am used to my bathing suit now… for some reason, I don't really care as much about how big I am." (Age 45; weight approx. 160, given with permission.)
